Volunteer stories

Judy, 48

What do you do at GHT?
Helping at the George House Trust Women’s Space, fundraising and providing one to one support to people living with HIV.

Why volunteer?
In this time, I’ve seen myself develop and grow and have been able to give my time to those who really need it.  As a GHT volunteer I have access to training, workshops and regular updates and feel that I am needed and valued at George House Trust.  I have found volunteering energising and it has helped me to gain confidence and self esteem.

James, 37

What do you do at GHT?
Various things; from speaking to newly diagnosed people, helping at the Gay Men’s Space, providing one to one support, to giving talks, driving, hospital visits, the list goes on!

Why volunteer?
I became involved with GHT a number of years ago, through an ex of mine.  I saw the support that was offered and given to him, and liked what I saw. On the whole, it’s good fun and a lot can be gained from volunteering, with good support and training from GHT and the chance to develop new skills and expand on the skills and experience you already have.  The kind of skills and experience vary greatly from person to person but I would say if you have some life experience and get along with a range of people then that’s enough to get started with!

Ray, 36

What do you do at GHT?
I’ve helped out with a range of things from mail outs to Gay Men’s Space, Service Monitoring and Review Team, African Space, Events, Positive Speaking and as a Trustee.

Why volunteer?
Volunteering gave me a great sense of purpose and incredible self confidence.  Speaking to hundreds of people at the World AIDS Day vigil was something that I wouldn’t have been able to do a few years ago.  The best things about volunteering at George House Trust are the fun and laughter with others, getting a sense of worth and making friends with others.  Volunteering has definitely had an impact on other areas of my life; I am now studying a Masters degree in Social Work.
