Battle of the Bars £409

posted: 15/12/2010

AXM Battle of the Bars posterRemember late November, at AXM, when entertainers, hosts and bar staff from venues across the village came together to battle it out to support George House Trust? We do, and the event raised a warming £409.22, for which we are very thankful.

The venues and their crews pulled out all the stops to be crowned winners of Battle of the Bars 2010.

Miss Thunderpussy (Thompsons Arms), Jessica Barge (Queer), Veronyka Kastle (Churchills), Misty Chance (View) as well as representatives from AXM, Sugar Pops, Crunch, The New Union, Manto, Via, The Birdcage and others put in their time for free just to entertain you.

The 10pm to 5am night at AXM was free entry apart from your generous donations on the door, all of which went directly to George House Trust.

The Battle of the Bars were keen to maximise charitable giving and so offered Buy One Get One free on all drinks from 10pm until 1am and drinks at promotional prices.

Thank you to all the venues for taking part, and to the artistes for performing free for you, the staff and people who supported us in any way on the night - generous people all!

Thank you very much from all of us at George House Trust!

Stigma and Manchester is HIV Positive

posted: 19/11/2009

Manchester Town Hall, Albert SquareHIV awareness and challenging HIV stigma are the twin themes in Manchester for the city’s World Aids Day efforts – Manchester is HIV Positive. December 1st, World AIDS Day, is in under two weeks.

The Manchester is HIV Positive campaign says the city is:

  • Positive about raising HIV awareness across the city
  • Positive about HIV prevention
  • Positive about promoting HIV testing
  • Positive about supporting those affected by HIV
  • Positive about challenging stigma and prejudice.

HIV Stigma in Canal Street - banner ditched in canal

The need to continue to strongly challenge HIV stigma is stark. Last Friday, the city’s World Aids Day Partnership put up a Manchester is HIV Positive banner along Canal Street, in the heart of Manchester's gay village, but by the Monday the banner was dumped in the canal. It was rescued and restored to the Sackville Park railings beside the Beacon of Hope, the city's permanent awareness monument, but it shows the size of HIV stigma problem we have, even in the gay village.

Manchester World AIDS Day team

The Lesbian & Gay Foundation, George House Trust, Black Health Agency and Manchester City Council have come together to form the partnership for the city's World AIDS Day efforts.

Andrew Gilliver of the Lesbian & Gay Foundation, highlighted the importance of the Manchester is HIV Positive campaign.
"For years there has been a strong commitment throughout Manchester to raise awareness of HIV, to challenge HIV stigma, to encourage safer sex and testing and to support those living with HIV; the Manchester is HIV Positive campaign continues and underpins all this work. It works to promote positive attitudes, support and understanding, and challenge negative attitudes and prejudice.
HIV is on the increase in Manchester, that's why this World Aids Day it is crucial that we raise awareness about getting tested, knowing your status, using condoms and lube, getting support, and challenging stigma."

Katherine Moulder of George House Trust noted that "Manchester has a strong history of supporting HIV positive people and activism around the rights of people living with HIV. With higher rates of new HIV diagnoses than ever before, this is not the time to sit back and let HIV come off the agenda. As a partnership we wanted to deliver a strong and thought provoking message about the importance of HIV prevention, testing and challenging HIV stigma."

Ben Easterbrook from the BHA said: "Black Health Agency is very proud to be part of the Manchester World AIDS Day partnership and feels that the campaign slogan Manchester is HIV Positive is both encouraging and thought provoking. It asserts that Manchester is positive about promoting awareness, positive about tackling HIV stigma, and positive about helping those affected by HIV. This campaign confirms that HIV is still a serious issue in Manchester, as it is nationally and globally. It fits neatly with the national campaign, HIV: Reality, and both serve as a call to arms. By stressing the gravity of the situation, and by tackling stigma, we can show that Manchester is positive about making a difference."

What's On for WAD?

There are a number of awareness and fund raising activities around World Aids Day. There's red ribbon fundraising across Manchester, flash-mobbing events to raise awareness of HIV, and the World Aids Day candle lit vigil in Sackville Gardens on Tuesday 1 December (7pm).

red and green balloons against trees and skyThanks to everyone who came along to our George House Trust Village Fête on Sunday 9 August. The car park at the back of George House Trust in our corner of inner city Ardwick was transformed into a rural England for the day with cream teas, a raffle, tombola, stalls and……sunshine.

Bunting and balloons
A big thank you to volunteers and staff and friends and family who got creative with bunting and balloons, made tea, buttered scones, squirted cream, dolloped jam, sold books, DVDs and CDs, clothes and bric-a-brac, collected donations, sold raffle tickets, ran the name a teddy game, whirled the tombola, talked about George House Trust and welcomed people to our building.

First time to George House Trust
Thanks to guests who came to the fête to support us – many people went home laden up with home made cakes and goodies bought and won from stalls. We loved hearing people’s views about the building, for many people it was the first time they’d been to George House Trust, and the feedback on our services was great to hear.

Launch of BRIght IDEAS, GiftAid envelopes
We used the George House Trust Village Fête to talk to people about our new DIY fundraising pack, BRIght IDEAS, which has information and inspiration in raising money in aid of our charity. BRIght IDEAS fundraising pack for george House Trust - includes an image of a light bulb

And we talked about Gift Aid too – we now have George House Trust branded Gift Aid envelopes meaning that for every £1 donated we receive a 28p bonus from the Government, at no cost to the donor or to us - they just give us back the tax you paid on that income.

Hot ticket raffle
Fête tombolla stallOur raffle, tombola, teddy game and card game were hot tickets.

They featured some fabulous prizes including the donation a brand new, box fresh microwave from our chair, Jim Vann; a meal for two from Queer; five family passes for a day out to The Beatles Story in Liverpool worth £36.25 each; a £20 gift voucher from Nice N Naughty; a £25 hair voucher from the Funky Crop Shop; a meal voucher from Tropeiro; a bottle of Red Star vodka from Cruz 101; a meal for two from Via Fossa and a meal for two from Crunch 2.

A big thank you to people and businesses for the prize donations and to our George House Trust volunteers, for talking to businesses about our work and getting them to get behind us.

Decluttering pays

We loved getting people’s kind donations of goods for sale – thanks to George House Trust friends for having a declutter knowing that our fête – and ultimately, our users – would benefit.

Near £700 raised

Nearly forgot….we raised £671.23 on the day.
