Mervis fled Malawi 5 years ago, in fear of her life after her husband had died, because she refused to bigamously marry her brother-in-law. She later became very ill her and was diagnosed with HIV. Mervis, with her daughter and her new-born granddaughter, have no support to turn to in Malawi and fear their lives will be in danger if they are returned. The HIV treatment drugs Mervis needs to keep her alive are not available in Malawi.
Elizabeth came to the UK after suffering rape and torture in Uganda because of her sexuality. She was forcibly deported from the UK in June 2006 after the authorities refused to believe she is a lesbian because she had a child as a young woman. Elizabeth is now seeking asylum in South Africa where she is destitute with no money to pay accommodation, food, or her vital HIV treatment.
