Help Marathon Munich Fundraising
posted: 13/08/2010
The Oxford English Dictionary defines the Marathon as "A bloody stupid thing to do, the first bloke who did it dropped dead, try getting a bus". So on the 10 October Daniel will be doing his first marathon, in Munich, Germany in 3 hours – that’s his time target.
Every penny and pound for George House Trust
Daniel’s running the Munich Marathon to raise money for George House Trust where he works. George House Trust provides advice, information and support to people living with or affected by HIV.
Daniel is paying all his own costs, so every penny you and others give will go directly to services for people living with HIV.
Daniel started his marathon training back in June and already his feet look like the surface of the moon, and after some champion chaffing his nips now resemble a pair of tea stains on his chest.
To achieve his 3 hour target he’s running 6 times a week and averaging over 50 miles a week.
His fundraising target is £1000 and he's almost 20% there. Please help make all this effort worthwhile and as he says - please dig deep.

£100 a Mile Marathon
posted: 29/04/2009
On a very sunny April morning, Nick Eaton and Jono Guildford ran the 26.2 mile London marathon in aid of George House Trust, and both completed it in just over 4 hours.
This was an especially good time because after training in Manchester cold and rain, they faced sunshine and hot conditions on London's streets. The weather provided a lovely day out for spectators, but it was not so kind on the runners!
Nick and Jono between them raised £2600 for George House Trust. Training for a marathon is a challenge, but raising over £100 a mile in sponsorship at the same time makes it a truly massive achievement.
We'd like to express our huge appreciation and say well done from the whole George House Trust team.
Time to add to the total
You can add your appreciation of the efforts of Nick and Jono by sponsoring them now at Nick's JustGiving page, and at Jono's JustGiving page.

Harmed by Vitamin Claims
posted: 20/04/2009
The lives of tens of thousands of people, especially in South Africa, were needlessly shortened by unscientific claims to cure HIV simply with vitamins.
Dr Ben Goldacre wrote a best seller called Bad Science and now you can read, free, the chapter about falsely peddling vitamins as if they are a cure for HIV.
This chapter couldn't be included when the book first came out because the vitamin pill plugger, Matthias Rath, was still suing the author and the Guardian newspaper.
Maathias Rath lost, has already paid almost a quarter million pounds in compensation and legal costs, and still owes another £300,000. He is a man who claimed vitamins cure cancer, cardio-vascular heart disease as well as HIV. Worse, he tells people the conventional treatments for these various conditions are harmful and must be replaced with vitamins. He makes a great deal of money from selling vitamins to the vulnerable and credulous.
In the case of HIV he got the president of S Africa and the health minister on his side. Thabo Mbeki gave Rath's ideas credence and support, and Mbeki and his minister bear a heavy responsibility for the deaths of thousands of people living with HIV.

Nick Eaton is running the London Marathon on Sunday 26th April. The marathon is 26.2 miles, or 42kms if you prefer and, as he says, it's a pretty daunting and challenging race to complete.
He's doing it this year to fundraise for George House Trust. You can donate at his JustGiving page and follow his training progress on Facebook
