Manchester Art Gallery World AIDS Day Events

George House Trust and Manchester Art Gallery are working together on two events to raisemaking a red ribbon awareness about HIV and challenge HIV related stigma.

The first event is a Family Art Day on Saturday 4th December from 1pm-3pm. This event is open to all families with children aged 6-11 years old and is free. The event is themed around World AIDS Day and using the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt to raise awareness about HIV. The event is completely free. Please arrive at 12:30pm to sign up for activities at Manchester Art Gallery, Mosley Street, Manchester M2 3JL.

The second event is an Imagine Weekend on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th December, 12noon-4pm open to adults and to families with children of any age. The event will focus on making a work of art from Red Ribbons. This event is completely free. No need to book - just drop in.

Please note that both these events are open to the general public and all activities will be delivered by Manchester Art Gallery staff, not staff from George House Trust. We therefore cannot guarantee confidentiality, if you choose to share personal information at these events.

Refugee Week Events

As part of Refugee Week, George House Trust  exhibited Destination Unknown at the Manchester Museum on Saturday 12th June.

Destination Unknown is a powerful and thought provoking exhibition of photographs and digital stories put together by the African HIV Policy Network. This was followed by panel debate drawing on the themes of the exhibition: is it inhumane to deport people living with HIV who are on treatments to countries where these treatments are not accessible?

Swot up on your refugee history at the Imperial War Museum North, Salford Quays. Bring out the artist in your kids with family workshops or explore the British history of sanctuary, through guided tours.
 

Escape to Safety Ever wondered what it feels like to flee your country? Then pop down to Swinton Precinct and immerse yourself in an interactive multi-media experience that puts you in the shoes of someone seeking sanctuary. Meet the Scientist Refugee Week Special If experiments, mind-bending theories and mad professors are your thing, come and rub brain cells with refugee scientists at the Museum of Science and Industry. Saturday 19 June, 11.30am - 2.30pm, Museum of Science and Industry, Liverpool Road, Castlefield, Manchester 
 

Refugee World Cup
Sixteen football teams featuring players from all over the world will take part in a Refugee World Cup on Saturday 26 June, 10am–4pm, Salford Sports Village, Littleton Road, Salford M7 3NQ.
Teams including refugees, asylum seekers and British-born players will go head to head in the Seven-a-Side Refugee World Cup Shield.
A fun-packed day of football! Come down and cheer on the teams!

Gay Men's Space Events

Schools and Colleges Awareness - Blackpool
From 6 December there’s a week of awareness in several schools as part of the 'Respect' week. There will be speakers on ‘respect’ issues such as domestic violence, homophobic bullying and sexual health.
A speaker living with HIV will give an informal talk on Friday 4 December to 6th form students who are being trained as teenage peer educators, and to the whole sixth form in the following week.

iPhone quiz prize for school and college students
lAndy Thompson, SHIVER’s LGBT worker and a colleague will give short talks on HIV at several school assemblies. A free Q&A quiz about HIV will award the winner an iPhone and is already drawing much student interest, promoted by the poster produced by the 6th form to advertise it.

Teenage peer educators The teenage peer educators are making a short film for these school assemblies which will include sound bites and clips from programmes popular with teens, such as Holyoaks which has a current Malachy and HIV storyline

Red Ribbons for donations will be widely available at the schools and colleges during this fortnight.

Video at Blackpool council customer centre
On a continuous display loop is a short video presentation in the Customer First Centre of Blackpool borough council; this will run for two weeks from 23rd November to 6 December.
 

This short video will also be shown in all the local LGBT venues on and around the 1st.

Mardi Gras club vigil - Blackpool
A short service and vigil will be held in the Blackpool gay club Mardi Gras on the Saturday 28 November and on Tuesday 1 December
 

Flying Handbag - Blackpool

There’s a charity all-dayer at the Flying Handbag on Sunday the 6 December to raise money for next year. £2 on the door.

George House Trust Job

We want to appoint a Community Fundraising and Events Co-ordinator

Closing date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 24th November 2008
Interviews will be held on Thursday 11th December 2008

Main purpose of the post

1. To lead on the implementation of our Community Fundraising strategy and increase income in line with agreed organisational targets.

2. To support George House Trust’s involvement in key events, such as Manchester Pride, World AIDS Day and Refugee Week, including the co-ordination of volunteers.

3. To ensure effective distribution of George House Trust’s marketing and publicity materials across the North West of England and to work with other staff to increase George House Trust’s profile.

4. To ensure that George House Trust’s fundraising activity complies with Fundraising Codes of Practice.

We are the major regional HIV support organisation for the NW of England.

We require a basic understanding of HIV and an awareness of current issues related to it.
