HIV sports sport
Information for the world of sport about HIV is now available on a new UK website. HIVSport's key aim is to raise awareness of HIV and promote sexual health in the field of sport. They are using what they call the ‘Badge of Hope’ which Manchester United players recently took to South Africa.George House Trust takes no sides in Manchester (or any) football, we're just reporting that South African fact.
As a not-for-profit organisation HIVSport works with professional sporting associations, HIV organisations, companies and medical bodies to
- Create, through sport, greater public awareness of the global epidemic of HIV and AIDS
- Provide education and training to people in all sports roles about HIV and sexual health
- Support sports-related HIV education projects
Through their affiliation to the Educational Sports Forum they make presentations including in the world of football, cricket and rugby. They raise awareness within sports and other organisations as well as amongst individual members of the player’s associations. A key example of the latter work occurred when players from Manchester United Football Club recently took the ‘Badge of Hope’ to South Africa.
The site, backed by Durex, is the start of a programme designed to provide essential sexual health information to players, coaches and clubs.
Dr David Hawkins, (based at London's Chelsea and Westminster hospital) author of ‘HIV and the Athlete’ has helped provide content for the site.
The site HIVSport has HIV news updates from across the sports world, with information on sports events and activities.
