Battle of the Bars £409

posted: 15/12/2010

AXM Battle of the Bars posterRemember late November, at AXM, when entertainers, hosts and bar staff from venues across the village came together to battle it out to support George House Trust? We do, and the event raised a warming £409.22, for which we are very thankful.

The venues and their crews pulled out all the stops to be crowned winners of Battle of the Bars 2010.

Miss Thunderpussy (Thompsons Arms), Jessica Barge (Queer), Veronyka Kastle (Churchills), Misty Chance (View) as well as representatives from AXM, Sugar Pops, Crunch, The New Union, Manto, Via, The Birdcage and others put in their time for free just to entertain you.

The 10pm to 5am night at AXM was free entry apart from your generous donations on the door, all of which went directly to George House Trust.

The Battle of the Bars were keen to maximise charitable giving and so offered Buy One Get One free on all drinks from 10pm until 1am and drinks at promotional prices.

Thank you to all the venues for taking part, and to the artistes for performing free for you, the staff and people who supported us in any way on the night - generous people all!

Thank you very much from all of us at George House Trust!

Munich Marathon Tops £1000

posted: 11/10/2010

Daniel leading FrontrunnersDaniel, one of our Service Development Managers, ran his first ever marathon in Munich, Germany, on Sunday and already has raised well over £1000 for George House Trust.

The Munich Marathon is in its 25th year like George House Trust. His target was to complete the 26 and a bit miles in 3 hours and he managed an excellent 3 hours 2 minutes. He easily exceeded his fundraising target of at least £1000. His total reached £1248.39 by 5pm on 11 October.

Reward his efforts and support George House Trust

He’s keen to see you and others make this total still more impressive. Please help make all this effort worthwhile and, as he says, please dig deep.
You can give here on his Marathon fundraising page at JustGiving.com

Every penny and pound for George House Trust
Daniel did the Munich Marathon to raise money for George House Trust, paying all his own costs, so every penny people give goes directly to services for people living with HIV.

Celebrating Our 25th with Pride

posted: 06/10/2010

preparing the float near Manchester Museum of Science and IndustryGeorge House Trust made a big impact at this years Pride event in central Manchester. 25 years ago six volunteers set up the organisation that became George House Trust. We've been at the heart of 25 years of campaigning and support for thousands of people with HIV across North West England ever since.

25th actions
The LGBT pride festival over the late August bank holiday weekend gave us a chance to promote our services to thousands of people in Manchester city centre. We chose silver on red for our 25th anniversary colours in the parade, had some human birthday cakes, gave out hundreds of 25th stickers, wore amazing retro George House Trust 25 T-shirts, shook a lot of cans, ran a popular stall in the Expo, photographed suggestions for T-shirt campaign slogans, and organised the vigil in Sackville Gardens.

We are, as ever, immensely grateful to everyone who supported us at Pride in a hundred different ways, including all who volunteered and gave money. The warmth in the faces of so many people in the crowds lining the city centre streets, clapping and cheering us around the parade route for our 25 years of collective community efforts brought tears to our eyes. Thank You.

We are still waiting for the official announcement of the amount raised by Manchester Pride that is to be distributed to HIV and LGBT projects.

Appreciations
We would like to thank Beverley Knight for closing the vigil, Antony Crank for being our compere and Jonathan Mayor for his rallying call to action.

Vigil poem
Poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy wrote and read this moving poem for the vigil. She’s gifted the rights to George House Trust and we are happy for others to use this poem non commercially.

VIGIL

When you lived,
no-one could hold a candle to you.
Tonight, small flames of memory
which scald the hands with wax tears
yearn to be tongues
uttering your name in light.

You burned bright,
illuminated right –
the vigilance of science,
the grace of tolerance;
this silence now
a deep, warm gathering of breath
to blow out guttering words:
stigma, ignorance, fear.
Let them know death.

One lit taper touches another,
contagious with fire,
and darkness glitters; brief flowers
each with its own smoke ghost -
they could be dancing, that close;
the living holding candles
for the lost.
