Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit beats success targets by good margin
The Legal Services Commission (LSC) require GMIAU to maintain a certain success rate on asylum, immigration and appeal work in order to keep the LSC funding. They require GMIAU to have a 35% success rate overall and 40% rate in asylum cases.
Many other immigration advice services such as solicitors are daunted by these targets and often refer difficult cases to GMIAU. Added to that GMIAU often have people who have had poor legal representation before, so they are often fighting cases with significant disadvantages.
The success figures have just been gathered to report back to the LSC. For the financial year 2007/08 GMIAU success rate overall was an amazing 55.22% compared with the target of 35%.
They won 40% of their asylum appeals and 65.38% of the immigration appeals.
It is really good to know that in the current difficult climate around asylum and immigration, GMIAU have such a positive success rate, especially when they take so many of the harder cases, including those of many people living with HIV.
